What's Hiding in Your Closet?

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

Do you remember the Friend’s episode where we learned neat freak Monica had a “dirty little closet”? Even though I know Friends is just a TV show when I watch this episode I feel happy I’m not the only one with a messy closet and a few junk drawers. If Monica, someone who craves order and seems to have it all together, has a closet that looked like that, then there is hope for the rest of us. She was so full of shame when Chandler saw the closet!

Aren’t we all this way, we want everyone to think we have things under control when in reality maybe we are just pretending to have life all organized. We tend to want people to think we have it all together. I am so guilty of this when in reality sometimes my life is like that crazy closet. I have more than my fair share to work on.

Yesterday I had a day off work, but I worked from 7:30 until 5:00...tackling a few closets around our house. It is hard to believe the junk three kids can accumulate in such a short amount of time. I should have taken a few before pictures of their closets to show you, but I didn’t know I was going to write about closet cleaning at the time. My girls have become experts at making a messy room look clean. Just like we do with our lives. We try hard to make our lives look good, when in reality we may be struggling to keep our heads above water. We pretend! My girls had been pretending to have a “clean room” for a long time. It was time to dig-in to the mess. There were items that didn’t fit anymore, items they didn’t like anymore, and the clothes and toys they did love were hidden among all the junk.

You see, I am knee-deep in clothes from Caroline’s side of the closet, I find her secret stash although I had a strong suspicion I knew what I would find in the corner of her closet. Apparently, when something falls off the hanger, she just stuffs it up under her snow bib in the very back or if she doesn’t feel like walking the few feet to the hamper she just stuffs and crams it into the abyss. I am pulling a missing Under Armour sweatshirt out of the pile and I am feeling the anger rising in me. I can’t believe someone could do this to these cute clothes... and that is the moment I feel God nudging me about the things I stuff way down in the nooks and crannies of my heart. Some of his good and perfect gifts he has given me, I have hidden. I also have a tendency to hide my insecurities, my pride, and my unbelief deep in my heart. You see, I knew where to look for Caroline ’s stash of laundry in her secret place because I’m her mother and I know her. Just like God knows what is hiding in our hearts. As I continue to pull items of clothes out of the corner, God continues to speak to my heart about a few attitude adjustments I need to make.

The process of cleaning out is never fun, but the rewards of cleaning out your closet are so rewarding. The girls went to bed that night so satisfied with a new and improved room. They had made space for their favorite toys and had so much fun being in their room playing before bedtime.

About three weeks ago, I wrote a very honest prayer to the Lord. I will spare you the details, but it was about how I wanted God to do some spring cleaning in my heart and rearrange things if he needed to. There in the midst of literally cleaning out a closet God put his finger on something I need to change in my life. An area of my life that needed rearranging! He answered my prayer!

If you think about all our hearts take in during a day, it is no wonder our hearts become weary or hardened. When you watch the news… you take in tragedy after tragedy. When you are trying to juggle a full-time job and be the best parent you can be...you can feel stressed and overwhelmed. Whatever life has placed in your way, maybe those frustrations serve a greater purpose… maybe those struggles can act as a catalyst to bring you into a deeper relationship with the Lord. He is the One who can shift your outlook and perspective on life. Matthew 11: 28-30 is one of my favorite verses of all time. “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

It is that quiet time when we bare our souls before the Lord and ask him to cleanse of us what the world feeds us that brings us closer to him. Closer to a peace that passes all understanding. Closer to laying down your head on your pillow and knowing you are right with an almighty God. Just like my girls felt refreshed after their room was clean, I felt the same way when I went to bed, my heart was in a better place.

God gives us fresh starts! His mercies are new every morning and I’m so glad this is true because everyday I fall short of the mark. It is not easy to look into our hearts, but it is rewarding! God revealed an area to me this week that I was trying to hide from his view and maybe my own view. He knew it was there and is being patient with me as I come to him for help. When we check our hearts and conduct some spring cleaning, we are able to see more clearly what is really important in our lives.

Do you have a spot in your heart that you need to clean? Ask God to help you clean up your heart! Be prepared, this is a prayer he will answer. It may not be the way you think he will answer, but he will answer. God desires for us to grow closer to him and he will answer all our prayers that lead us closer to him.
